Customer Rating: Summary: The Ascent of Man Comment: "Walking with Cavemen" is an interesting look at the progression or evolution of man, from the first ape-like creatures to the homo-sapien. It begins with the famous "Lucy" skeleton from over 3 million years ago, and follows adaptations through the ages - walking on two feet instead of all fours, using tools, and later, making tools, changing from a "specialist" that can only do one thing well to a creature that is able to adapt to changing environments, and more.
It's important to note that a lot of what you'll see here is speculation - there are actors playing the parts of these various species, and exactly how they looked and how they behaved is at least partly conjecture. Scientists and biologists are making their "best guess" based on where the skeletons were discovered, what the skulls looked like (jawbone etc.), how recent in time they can be placed through testing, and other factors. So when you see Lucy's tribe leave the trees and walk, you have to keep in mind that they might not have looked or acted exactly in the way shown. Even so, it's an intriguing picture of how early man might have evolved.
Four stars. Seeing our distant cousins struggle to survive, it's easy to appreciate the fact that we've come a long way!

Take a stroll with the most personal and captivating entry in the Walking with series yet a kaleidoscope of 3.5 million years of human evolution, presented by Golden Globe nominee Alec Baldwin.
Follow a group of tottering ape-like men as they get the hang of their new bipedal skills and then use those skills to fight in their very first turf war. Travel to ancient Africa where dozens of human species are brought to stunning life through state-of-the-art make-up and visual effects for the development of our first, crude burial rituals and the advent of the extended family structure. As time passes, the continents shift and entire mountain ranges sink into the sea all presented using a special visual technique developed just for this program. Eventually, the species with the biggest brain wins out: Homo sapiens easily push the Neanderthals out of ice age Europe. They demonstrate skills like navigation and critical thinking, but can they learn to get along?
Then we were apes, now we are men. The epic story of human history comes to life in a handsome production of the lives of creatures with which we share an undeniable kinship. It is by turns uproarious and sad, frightening and frolicking showing how Homo sapiens, the family of modern humans, have become unique on earth.
