Customer Rating: Summary: big disappointment Comment: I was really looking forward to receiving (and using) this DVD. A Kripalu yoga teacher, somatics. . .I expected a great DVD. I have chronic lower back pain and fibromyalgia and even though I have plenty of resources, I like to get new ones once in a while to mix it up.
I just finished doing the 40 minute session and I was underwhelmed, to say the least. First off, Ms. Rypins talks much too fast for a relaxation session. Even for some simple poses and movements, I realized I just did not take in what she had just said. She had either spoken too quickly or just plain used too many words!
Additionally, 20 minutes for the lower body and 20 minutes for the upper body is way too short a span of time, IF there are so many movements, as there are on this DVD. Both Kripalu yoga and somatics stress getting more in touch with your body. Having enough time to really feel what you are doing is of the utmost importance. I felt quite hurried using this DVD. I didn't have time to relax and I didn't have time to feel any release.
I can see others were quite happy and achieved good results with this DVD and I'm happy for them. Even though I don't enjoy giving poor reviews, I felt it was important to give my opposing viewpoint. I'm sorry I had to do so, though, because Kripalu yoga and somatics (both through Hanna and Feldenkrais) have improved my quality of life tremendously.
The best thing I can say about this DVD is that it's "better than nothing" if one doesn't have much time to practice yoga. I seriously doubt I'll ever use it again.
Please see my list "Oh my aching back" for recommendations.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great pain relief Comment: I have been suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia (facial and neck nerve pain)for the past 4 months. This DVD has been excellent in helping me to relax and release muscle tension. The entire practice is very relaxing and the moderator has a nice calming voice. The only difficulty is trying to see the movements while laying down. Once you go through it a few times you figure out how to position yourself accordingly.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great relaxation workout! Comment: I've been following the exercises on this DVD for a month and find them to be relaxing and healing. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who suffers from tension-related shoulder, back and leg pains.
Customer Rating: Summary: Unbelievable opening Statement Comment: This a tough product to review really. Why?, because the content is very good. I have enjoyed the exercises. They seem to be very beneficial and there isn't much out there for visual viewings of Thomas Hannas' work. It takes a number of viewings to get the moves down properly, because you can't really see what's going on while you are on your back. And as soon as you look up, you are out of alignment. Patience overcomes this though. But what really disturbs me, is the opening statement. Here it is, word for word. "Copyrited material. If you copy this, you will have chronically tightened muscles for the rest of your life.." WOW!!
I sympathize with people who are trying to make a living on recorded materials. That is why there is a standard opening on most Dvd's explaining the penalties. But you know this is standard and not directly from the author. If Ms. Rypins thinks this is a positive way to send out energy in her healing practise, I question this approach. Should we as viewers say, if we don't get the benefits you talk about, using this Dvd, you should get migraines for the rest of your life. Of course not. Especially not if your on a healing path. And she uses Cheri Huber (whom I admire greatly) as an inspirtation. Let alone teaching the groundbreaking work of Hanna. So to sum up, the content is good and deserves at least a 4 star rating but the energy behind the opening leads a lot to be desired.
Customer Rating: Summary: Gentle practice for managing severe upper and lower back spasms Comment: The yoga positions practiced in this selection are gentle and respectful of overstressed back muscles. It moves steadily through the routines and seems like hardly any time has passed from start to finish. No standing positions are used so it is gentle on the knees and ankles.
