Customer Rating: Summary: Enjoyed by students Comment: I showed this video to a class Iu was teaching about mental health problems. I found it to be very accurate and it did a good job of keeping the students attention. It's not like some movies that have 30 year olds acting the roles of high school kids. The students said the could relate to the subject matter since it was being portrayed by people their own age. Overall I think this was a great investment.
Customer Rating: Summary: Outdated, erroneous, and stigmatizing . . . terrible! Comment: This recently-produced video titled "Understanding Mental Illness" contains information and classifications of mental illness that pre-date the DSM-III. One of the most glaring examples is its description/classification of schizophrenia as a "Personality Disorder." What's worse, really bad actors bulge their eyes and display stereotypical (and often violent or menacing) behaviors during poorly-produced vignettes. For example, a woman trembles with "fear" as a rubber spider is pulled across a blanket as she lies in bed. I've seen more realistic scenes (and better actors) in 1950s era 3-D movies! This video/DVD is far worse than any of the old 16mm health education films that I suffered through as a high school student. I would have rated this video/DVD as a "Zero-Star" if it was an available option.
