Comment: Nice choice of tunes and the playing is acceptable BUT this set lacks the most basic feature of any play-along CD. There's no way to play the CDs with the melodies turned off and just the backup sounding.

I've used many play-along/music minus one type sets for various instruments in many styles. The point of play-along CDs is to be able to practice with accompaniment. Most are recorded in stereo with the melody in one channel (Bluegrass Workout 1 uses that method) and just accompaniment in the other. Others provide multiple tracks of each tune, with selected instrument(s) removed. Unfortunately, with Bluegrass Workout 2 the melody is in both channels, so it can't be removed.

When asked about this Kaufman's explanation was that not all new stereos have balance knobs and you'd have to unplug one speaker (not the only solution). Sorry, this makes no sense to me. Without the ability to turn off the lead you could just as well (or better) just play along with regular CDs.

I hope Kaufman with reconsider and re-release this set with a different mix.

Note: Using applications like Transcribe or Amazing Slowdowner you can easily control the stereo balance of any CD, as well as adjust the tempo (without changing the pitch) and do other useful things.

Editorial Reviews:

This follow-up to Steve Kaufman's hot-selling CD series (HL00641379, $44.95) features jammer-friendly backup tracks to fifty traditional bluegrass and old-time favorites, played in slowed-down and up-to-speed versions. Learning players get a band to help them get their chops together on: "Angeline the Baker," "Back up and Push," "Bonaparte's Retreat," "Bull Durham," "Cattle in the Cane," "Cherokee Shuffle," "Leather Britches," "Little Rabbit," and lots more. 105-PAGE BOOK * ALL LEVELS * INCLUDES CHORDS and MUSIC * INCLUDES TAB FOR GUITAR and MANDOLIN
