Summary: Psychiatrist
Comment: This book is helpfully written in many ways and I would recommend it. However, the "Professional Help and Medication" section on page 51 is sadly not authoritative and even dead wrong. For example, phenelzine is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and not a neuroleptic as the author claims.

Comment: I'd been hitting rut after rut in Eating Disorder therapy when my diagnosis was revised to that of BPD. Whether or not you agree with the label given to this disorder and whether or not your diagnosis is certain, if you're struggling with intense emotions this book is worth a go. Its a combination of analysis of the problem and a practical guide of how to regain control. I would NOT reccomend using it in isolation, whilst it provides a framework for recovery the book is only intended as a companion to professional help. Easy to understand with relevant sections on diagnosis, explanation and symptom management, I've found it very useful in my own life. The multi-impulsive nature of BPD means you need a broad approach that tackles the range of behaviours. This book is effective not least because the author appears to have a good understanding of this.

Editorial Reviews:

The treatment of personality disorder is a major concern facing current mental health services. Managing Intense Emotions and Overcoming Self-Destructive Habits is a self-help manual for people who would meet the diagnosis of 'emotionally unstable' or 'borderline personality disorder' (BDP). The title outlines a brief intervention that is based on a model of treatment known to be effective for other conditions, such as anxiety, depression and bulimia. The manual describes the problem areas, the skills needed to overcome them and how these skills can be developed. Areas covered include:

* The condition and controversy surrounding diagnosis of BPD Drug and alcohol misuse
*Emotional dysregulation and the role of thinking habits and beliefs
*Depression and difficult mood states
*Childhood abuse and relationship difficulties

It will be essential reading for people with BPD and professionals involved in their care - psychologists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatrists and occupational therapists.
