Summary: Not what I thought it was going to be
Comment: It was very hard to read I'm not a Doctor and I guess I thought it was going to just tell me what I should be taking, but if I follow all of this info i would be on so many vitamins i wouldn't have to eat Breakfast I would just eat a hand full of vitamins.
I do look up info and it does give me some answers I can put into use I just wished they would have written it for someone who is not up on her vitamins and minerals

Summary: Great information...
Comment: This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins. I had a hard time putting the book down. I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using. Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.

Summary: Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be
Comment: If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals. But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.

For instance various recent studies on Vitamin E supplementation have shown no or negative correlation to heart disease. Several studies have even shown an increased mortality rate for people taking high doess of antioxidents (which are thought to do the opposite). A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted some of these growing concerns (search on "the case against vitamins" for that article or "dangers of vitamins" for a variety of articles.)

I'm not an expert, in fact one of the reasons I bought this book was because I am confused on what to take and not to take and this seemed to be an impartial book. All I would suggest is that this book very much recommends taking vitamins at doses much higher than the recommended daily allowances (RDI), and before you take this book as the latest and best info and start a regiment of 15 pills a day, make sure you really do talk to your doctor or at least look at the contradictary studies now available online.

Summary: Looking for a great book with gobs of information?
Comment: Looking for a great book with gobs of information? Look no further! This book explains what each supplement is used for and the doses to take for specific diseases or just for optimal health. Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it lists information about adverse results if too much of a supplement is taken. I refer to this book time and time again.

Editorial Reviews:

Originally published in 1997, The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book was one of the first of its kind in the health market. In this new and expanded edition, Dr. Shari Lieberman and Nancy Bruning describe how anyone can design a personalized core supplement program of essential vitamins and minerals.

While implementing the latest research, the authors expertly cut through the confusing fads and hype surrounding exotic (and less essential) nutrients to help people decide which vitamins and minerals are necessary in their diets, and the appropriate dosage. Lieberman and Bruning show how the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients can strengthen the immune system, fight illness, slow aging, and maximize health. Included in the book are sample worksheets and supplement checklists to assist readers in incorporating these important, healthful supplements into their busy lifestyles.
